| “Brass Quartet No. 1” was written in 1964 and modified in 2012 by Douglas Hill. Written during the first semester of Hill’s freshman year in college, this single movement quartet experiments with rich quartal harmonies, multi meters, and extensive motivic development through the versatile voices of lyrically melodic and playfully rambunctious brass instruments. It was premiered at Indiana University in 1967 with Susan Slaughter and Elmer Kudo on trumpets, Verne Kagarice on trombone with the composer on the horn. Upon revisiting one of his earliest compositions, Hill has modified it only slightly while retaining its original melodic, harmonic and formal properties. Also available as a PDF. |
